Studying Braille

July 1, 2012

We studied Braille in our practicum class under Prof. Rocal. She invited the principal from the Philippine School for the Blind in Pasay as well as their coordinator to come to school and teach us to write and read Braille so we are better equipped in teaching children with special needs.

Mrs. Rosalie R. Condes told us first how the blind are taught. Just like regular students, the blind are given "pre-writing" exercises. If 'seeing' children are taught how to scribble and have a good grip on their pencils, blind children are introduced with different textures to prepare them in feeling the braille reading materials. They are also allowed to explore the braille stencils before they are formally taught the letters of the alphabet.

She also taught us a technique they use when they teach the parents of the blind students. By using egg cartons and egg toys, they are able to create a material that's big enough to show the class the positioning of the dots of each letter.

Mrs. Condes gave each of us (or at least each group of two) a peg board where we can position the plastic pins according to her instruction. So here are the letters of the alphabet!

*Note that the letter "W" is the one at the last braille cell.

This illustrates the alphabet better.

Then we were given the braille stencil (the blue tool), which would guide us in writing. I think it's Php 170.00 with the papers already. These papers are special because they can stand the tearing and each dot you make in them can rise properly.

The thing about about "writing" in Braille is that you have to think horizontally inverse so that when you punch the hole, the rough back side is the one being read.

So with this codigo, we were able to write our names! Here's mine.

I wrote my name twice, as you can see. But I made a mistake with both of them!

After a few hours learning about Braille, I got pretty much fast writing and reading the dots. I think I'll do well in this area. :)
