The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)

What if Jesus Christ never died in the cross?

Cool!
  • Probably the most (unique) human portrayal of Jesus Christ
  • The irony that Jesus Himself was crucified when it used to be his job to make crosses for the Romans
  • Its deviation from the bible
  • The controversies in the release of this film
  • Judas as Jesus’ trustworthy best friend.
  • Magdalene as Jesus' girlfriend
  • Jesus never giving in to Magdalene's constant seduction
  • You get to wonder if John the Baptist was doped or was just really weird
  • You get to see what if Jesus got older, got wives and got children
  • You get to see what Jesus’ temptations in the desert look like and how he growled at them
  • A sigh of relief at the last scene
Uncool--
  • I found the premise detached to stories of a younger Christ.
  • If you watched the movie, you could begin questioning why Jesus could ever feel strong doubt now when God have communicated with him all his life.
  • Jesus hurt his mother with his preachings.
  • Continuity blunders and confusing gaps
My only and main concern was that if Jesus should be portrayed as a human again, anything other than faith should be challenged. The aspect of faith should be left alone unless they start the story from Jesus’ childhood and alter the bible accounts from there. If you have, for example, lived with voices, miracles and apparitions all your life, just like Jesus, you would have gotten used to it. You don’t question it when you turn 30+ right? Judas had the hardest part in the account. From slapping and scolding Jesus to stop making crosses to questioning his teaching strategies, Judas had to betray Jesus in the end at his request to make things happen. If I weigh it down, Judas had the strongest conflict within himself. He loved Jesus that he won’t betray him, but because he loved Jesus, he had to – even if it meant risking himself to be looked down upon by fellow disciples and believers. The idea of Judas’ character is disturbing. But it could be possible.

DON’T watch this film if:

  • You are close-minded. One thing that shouldn’t be tolerated is hearing negative remarks from people who are not up to the challenge of someone challenging their beliefs. If you don’t free your mind, then stick to your faith and stay there. Everyone should be entitled to his own ideas. After all, they're all just ’what ifs’.
  • On the other hand, if you really have strong faith, I encourage you to watch this. It won’t break you. The film gives a strong impact. It may be disturbing, but it effectively proves one great point - that it was necessary for Jesus to die.
