5 Reasons to Choose the Veterinarian Over Google

Our dog Jessie gave birth to 5 cute puppies on January 2 (or 3?) of 2013. We named the two brown ones Margaux and Celine, the pure white puppy - Dong Bek, the one with the dark spots - Spotty (although we gave her a different name at first), and the puppy with the lighter brown spots - Tisoy, who is the only male of the brood.

The female dogs we had in the past never got pregnant so it was our first time to have that many puppies at home. They were really adorable. They all love each other so much that we often see them snuggle with each other. But of course, since it's our first time to take care of tiny newborn pups, we found their closeness cute. It was such an exciting experience for us to take care of these delicate creatures.

For the first few weeks, they fed on Jessie's breast milk. Unfortunately, there came a time when she ran out of it. And it was then when the problem started.

At first, it was Margaux who started to shiver. Then came, Celine, then Tisoy and Spotty. Dong Bek never shivered, maybe that's why she became the biggest among them.

After a few days, the shivers of the brownies: Margaux and Celine subsided. But Spotty and Tisoy still had the shakes. My mom and I didn't know what to do! The puppies were already getting thinner, while the healthiest of them all was getting fatter and fatter. We were worried because we felt that all the puppies should already be as big as Dong Dong Bek was.

After failing to find the answers from the internet as to why puppies shake, Kuya Jun and I brought the poor Tisoy to the veterinarian. Doctor Olympio, who had a clinic near the Meycauayan tollgate, gave him a shot of calcium and a bottle of vitamins. He told us that shivers have many causes and suggested that we have all of them dewormed. Obviously, it's our first time to take care of baby dogs so those canine health considerations were not on our minds.

A few days after his check up, Tisoy's health improved, but Spotty got worse. So we brought her to the vet next and the doctor did the same to her. We gave them all a dose of vitamins and minerals and calcium each day. We also gave all of them combantrin (tablet dewormer). All those worms that got out from their asses is not something you would want to see before meals.

Fast forward to now, they all have become so healthy and voracious eaters! We gave Dong Bek to Aunt Alice, and gave Margaux to my uncle in Pangasinan. There are only three of them left here, two of them would not have survived if we didn't bring them to the veterinarian.

If you have a dog or a puppy, even if it's an Aspin (Asong Pinoy), a.k.a. Askal (Asong Kalye), they deserve the love and care that you are capable of giving the most gorgeous of all dog breeds. Bringing them to a nearby veterinarian is a great way to keep them healthy, happy and alive.

Here are 5 more reasons why you should bring your pets to the Veterinary Clinic instead of Googling for a cure:

1.  Veterinarians know more than the internet
When our puppies got sick, the first thing we did was Google "puppy shakes", "puppy shivers", "shivering puppies" or "shaking puppies", and some other keyword combinations that we hope could lead us to an answer. Most of them say that it could be a neurological disease, while some say it could be as simple as "they are just cold". First, we live in a tropical country (the Philippines) so shivering from cold is not really a thing here (unless you live in Baguio City). Second, there was really no way for us ordinary folks to know if it's neurological, what more treat it. Nobody in the internet thought that if a puppy shivered, it could be because it needed calcium. Jessie had no milk anymore before the puppies reached their first month so we thought it could be a significant cause. But we wouldn't even have this hypothesis had we not taken one of them to the Vet and learned that calcium would lessen the shivers.

2.  Veterinarians teach you things you wouldn't try to learn from Google
When you take your pet to the Vet, he will teach you how to do things the right way - like how to hold it unthreateningly (keeping you from getting bitten), or anything else you had no idea about that can help you take better care of your pet's health. Of course you can just Google something you are curious about and get your answers at the press of the Enter key. But if you are totally clueless, paying a visit to the dog doctor will be an educational trip for you.

3.  The vet clinic is a real place you can run to when there's a pet emergency
The Internet may have most of the answers you need, but nothing beats having your poor sick doggie checked by the veterinarian. There is a place that you can actually turn to in case your pet gets weak and sick, and it's not Google.

4.  Google may have information, but your vet has experience
There is no doubt how much you can learn from the Internet. But the accumulated experience of your friendly veterinarian makes him a better choice between the two. You may have to spend a few bucks for these check ups, but at least, you are ensured that your pet is in good hands. Besides, if you don't act fast on your pet's illness, it may get more costly for you in the future.

5.  The Vet can check up your pet and make a diagnosis; Google can't even see or touch it
Our pets are unique in many many ways. Similar symptoms may be happening to different animals, but you cannot always be sure that they are suffering from the same sickness. Seek the help of your veterinarian right away and have him (physically) see your pet and make a diagnosis based on both your and his observations. Google does not know what's going on with him because Google is NOT A PERSON.

Don't get me wrong. I love Google and all the other search engines out there. But there are just questions that are too important and complex that we cannot just rely on the Internet. To ensure a healthy dog, cat, bird, hamster, rabbit, etc., go out there and seek a pro. There is a reason why our pet doctors studied years and years of Veterinary Medicine.
