Dolphy "John Puruntong" Quizon dies

Veteran actor-comedian Dolphy Quizon died Tuesday evening, a few days before his 84th birthday on July 25. Dolphy was taken to the Makati Medical Center June 9 due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been confined since then at the intensive care unit. I've read his bio in Wikipedia and he can be rightly called the "King of Comedy" for his comedic talent embodied by his long roster of works on stage, radio, television and movies. His beginnings as a struggling actor was what amazed me. Wikipedia on Dolphy
World War II World War II -- Dolphy was about thirteen when World War II started. He did odd jobs including shining shoes; button-attacher at a pants factory; bottle arranger, classifying them according to size; stevedore at the pier; trading; and a horse and buggy driver. In his free time, he regularly watched stage shows at the Life Theater and Avenue Theater learning from his idols comedy duo Pugo and Togo, Robin "the fatty" Geronimo, and for dance, Benny Mack and Bayani Casimiro. He started as a stage performer during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. Dolphy was turning 17 when Benny Mack got him as a chorus dancer, one month at Avenue Theater and then he moved to Lyric Theater. He also appeared in shows at the Orient Theater. Golay was his first stage name. During air raids, they would interrupt the show and run for cover at the air-raid shelter in the orchestra section, together with the audience. If no bombs exploded, the show then resumed. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolphy)
Early on you can see how persevering and resilient he was that you know he was made for greatness, and as they say the rest is history judging from his long list of works be it movies or on TV. I enjoyed his comedic ways because his timing for blurting out punch lines is impeccable. I especially love his character "John Puruntong" from "John En Marsha" the best. His frequent exchange of insults with his mother-in-law "Donya Delilah" is just so hilarious. Donya Delilah's frequent banter with John made the catch phrase "Kaya ikaw John, magsumikap ka!" famous. I would read about his state of health on the web and I was even glad that he was recuperating. His resilience was what made me believe that he can recover from his illness. He has in the past and was even showing signs of recovery days before. I was secretly hoping that he would recover from this medical ordeal. Dolphy has been a victim of online hoaxes many times that he is dead so I was waiting for somebody to debunk this one. Now, it is definitely true.. The King is dead. Philippine showbiz will never be the same without you Dolphy. You will surely be missed.
